The meltwater from the snow and ice in the Qilian Mountains flows into the Geopark through the Shule River, Danghe River, Dangquan River, and other rivers, creating a small number of Gobi oases along the way. These oases provide a crucial habitat and water source for wildlife. The Gobi wetland ecosystem is of great importance for studying the habitat and migration patterns of Gobi wildlife. In the Yardang Geoarea, the surface of the fixed sand dunes is covered with vegetation adaptable to arid conditions such as reeds, cynomorium songaricum, Nitraria tangutorum Bobr., and camelthorn. This special geomorphologic landscape is mainly caused by the low terrain, shallow groundwater level, and occasional surface water reaching here. Such a condition is conducive to the growth of vegetation. This area has great significance for studying ecology and desertification prevention and control in arid areas. The special geographical location and climatic conditions have nurtured the unique natural ecology of the Geopark. Here, the unique ecosystem composed of the wetland ecosystem and desert ecosystem has provided a release base for Przewalski's horses and an important migration and breeding place for wild animals in western China. It also constitutes the first barrier to wind prevention and sand fixation in China.
