The Geopark has been attracting the explorer, geographers and geological workers to conduct multi-disciplinary research including geography, geology and tectonics, the ecological environment, culture and history as well as tourism development and management due to its geography, geological structure and location. Different types and levels of research reports monographs and papers have been submitted.
Geology and Structural Science
Many scientific research institutions have done a lot of work in this area such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing University, China University of Geosciences, and Gansu Geological Exploration Survey Bureau. Much fruitful work has been done in the field of regional geological survey, Yadan formation environment, tectonic evolution history, and the reason for the formation of Crescent Moon-shaped Spring. The regional geological survey has been successively presented and many influential science and technology papers have been published.
Geographical Science
Scholars from Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou University and Gansu Provincial Water Resources Bureau have conducted researches on Yardang landform, treatment for the water level of Crescent Moon-shaped Spring and sand activities in the Mount Mingshashan, which has played a positive role in promoting the protection of geological relics and the development of tourism resources.
The Ecological Environment Science
Dunhuang Area is one of the main study area for studying the ecological environment in arid areas of North Xinjiang. Scholars from Lanzhou University, Northwest Normal University, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences have made a pioneering contribution to the study on sandstorm activities environment, ecological environment protection and environment evolution, which provides the scientific basis for the protection of ecological environment in Dunhuang Area.
Cultural and Historical Science
Experts and scholars mainly from the Dunhuang Research Institute make outstanding contributions to the digging of Mogao Grottoes as well as the study, protection and restoration of the cave paintings, which has played a key role in protecting the world cultural heritage. At the same time, there are scholars from other institutions such as Lanzhou University, Shaanxi Normal University, Northwest University making enormous contributions to the study of Dunhuang’s culture and history.
Tourism Development and Management
Scholars from institutions such as China University of Geosciences, Lanzhou University, Institute of Dunhuang conduct on-field research about the development and management of tourism resources including Yardang geological relics, Mogao Grottoes, Yumenguan Pass and Yangguan Pass. Then scientific development views are put forward.
These fruitful research work not only promotes the scientific significance of the Geopark, but also plays a positive role in better developing tourism resources, constructing ecological city, and promoting economic development.
