Located in the Silk Road, Dunhuang Geological Park owns abundant places of historic figures and cultural heritage predominantly including Yumenguan, Yangguan, Great Wall of the Han Dynasty, Hechang City and the Mogao Grottoes etc. The Mogao Grottoes are both world cultural heritage and the national key cultural relics protection units, which Yumenguan belongs to as well. Yangguan, Great Wall of the Han Dynasty and Hecang City are all cultural relic protection units of Gansu Province.
There are a few places of historic figures and cultural heritage without special protection within the park. The threat they are faced with is mainly weathering and superficial destruction from tourists. Therefore, it is of utmost urgency for these landscapes to take proper protective measures. At present, the main measures taken to protect these landscapes are limiting the number of tourists and repair relevant facilities of landscapes regularly.
Following protection measures should also be taken for human landscapes mentioned above:
1. Protection of human landscapes should be improved to reduce damage caused by nature and human beings.
2. Management of historic heritages and the surroundings should be strengthened and measures of fire prevention, lightning prevention and security should be worked out.
3. Tourists flow should be controlled scientifically to avoid potential safety hazards caused by tourists overload.
4. Propaganda of the protection of historic heritages should be elevated. Setting up bulletin boards for protection and distributing protection brochures can also enhance people's awareness of protection.
