The Protection of Geologic Relics in Yardang National Geopark

Yardang landform is a valuable and non-renewable natural resource that the nature gives us. Yardang mounds with peculiar forms and black Gobi with flat surface constitute geological heritage and natural landscape of Yardang landform. Geological heritage and the natural environment are protected from damage, which is the focus in the planning. It is the key emphasis in work with close and long-term attention of our managers. In the protection, our work shall be strictly carried out according to conservation planning. Stick to the principle of "protecting the authenticity of topography, the stability of regional natural ecosystems and the sustainability of tourism development", and a series of solid and effective work of management and protection shall be carried out for the Geopark:

First, spraying and enclosed rake of the iconic scene in the park shall be protected. The principle shall be stuck to that it does not affect tourists enjoying the natural landscape and also the protective role is played. We have gone through repeated practice and many improvements. In addition to a large area which is protected according to the first, second and third class, the iconic scene "Peacock" within the main protected area is sprayed and protected twice with PS glue against natural and man-made damage to the landscape. The "peacock" is segmented and protected with fence; each of the other attractions is also protected through different ways, which is recognized and praised by the majority of visitors and leaders at all levels. 

Second, the protection begins from the source. All foreign vehicles are prohibited from entering the park. This way, the geology and landform in the Geopark and fragile vegetation are effectively protected. The effect is obvious.

Third, the warning monument or board is erected to remind people to protect nature and environment. Tourists are not allowed to climb Yardang. Security police of the Geopark patrol and check at any time. The behavior of uncivilized sightseeing and destruction of scenic spots are stopped in time.

Fourth, flush-free toilets and trash can are set up in the Geopark. Someone is sent specially to look after them. The garbage is removed timely. We always exhort staff in the Geopark to take the lead and set an example with their own acts. Thus, environmental protection within the Geopark becomes a conscious behavior of each person. Because the protection and management measures are in place, the environment of Dunhuang Yardang National Geopark is ensured from pollution. The landscape and spots of the park are still as ever. According to the protection requirements of "Overall Plan of Dunhuang Yardang National Geopark", and in accordance with distribution and characteristics of natural resources in Yardang landform, protection of different levels is implemented. In the core protected area, the impact of external factors is strictly controlled. Visitors entering the Geopark are strictly controlled. Motor vehicles are banned from entering. For the vehicle with the work of construction in the park, the provided course is taken. Meanwhile, the penalties are increased. The geological environment and ecological environment in the Geopark are ensured from destruction.

Fifth, there are a few wild animals in the Geopark, such as Huangban, hares and wild camels. It is more than particularly valuable to arid desert region. Security police station in the Geopark takes strict management ways to protect them. Arbitrary arrest and killing of wild animals is banned. Those catching and killing wild animals shall be prosecuted for legal liability. The wildlife resources are protected to the maximum currently. They return back to the Geopark, so that plant and animals in the region are restored to vitality previously.
